翻譯:President Bush Meets with United Nations Secretary General B - 英語演講

July 17, 20

2:16 P.M. EDT

PRESIDENT BUSH: Mr. Secretary General, wele; thanks for ing. We've just had a wide-ranging and full discussion on a lot of issues. First, Mr. Secretary General, I appreciate you, one, taking on this job; two, working extremely hard; and, three, doing a fine job. I admire the values you hold dear to your heart and I appreciate the chance to share some thoughts with you.

We discussed a lot of issues. We have discussed Darfur. We discussed proliferation. We discussed the potential trial for -- about Hariri. The Secretary General and I talked about the speech I gave yesterday on the Middle East. We have talked about Afghanistan and Iraq.

And one of the things I briefed the Secretary on was my views about extremism and these radicals that will do anything to disrupt the goals set by the United Nations and/or disrupt the advance of democracy in peaceful societies. Al Qaeda is strong today, but they're not nearly as strong as they were prior to September the 11th, 2001, and the reason why is, is because we've been working with the world to keep the pressure on, to stay on the offense, to bring them to justice so they won't hurt us again; to defeat them where we find them.

And now we find them in Iraq. These killers in Iraq, people who will kill innocent life to stop the advent of democracy, people who are trying to get on our TV screens on a daily basis to drive us have got ambitions and plans. These people have sworn allegiance to the very same man who ordered the attack on September the 11th, 2001, Osama bin Laden. And they want us to leave parts of the world, like Iraq, so they can establish a safe haven from which to spread their poisonous ideology. And we are steadfast in our determination to not only protect the American people, but to protect these young democracies. And I appreciate your interest in the subject.

Al Qaeda would have been a heck of a lot stronger today had we not stayed on the offense. And it's in the interest of the United States to not only defeat them overseas so we don't have to face them here, but also to spread an ideology that will defeat their ideology every time -- and that's the ideology based upon liberty.

So Mr. Secretary General, I'm proud to have you here and thank you for your leadership.

SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON: Thank you very much, Mr. President. This is my second time for meeting with you in this Oval Office. I appreciate your strong support and active participation of the United States in the United Nations. And I'm very much grateful for all the strong support for peacekeeping operations.

In addition to what President Bush has just mentioned on the issues we have covered, I'd like to mention just a few important, from my perspective.

First of all, I wele the interest which you have announced yesterday for the prehensive Middle East peace process. As a member of the Quartet, I am prepared to work very closely to see expedited peace process in the Middle East.

As for Iraqi situation, this is a problem of the whole world. And as far as the United Nations is concerned, we are prepared to contribute to Iraqi government and people to help them overe this difficulty, in close coordination with the MNF and including the United States. We are going to help their political facilitation, as well as economic and social reconstruction. And we also are going to continue the international pact process for Iraq,翻譯論壇, as well as expanded -- foreign ministers meeting. This will provide good opportunity for Iraqi people and international munity to work together for peace and security in Iraq.

In Darfur situation we have made considerable progress. And we are going to step up the political process. We have made a positive development yesterday in Tripoli through the meeting chaired by United Nations and African Union. We are going to have negotiation, pre-negotiation in Arusha, Tanzania in early August. We are also going to facilitate humanitarian assistance. I'm going to step up efforts to deploy hybrid operations as soon as possible in Darfur to resolve this issue as soon as possible. In that regard, I appreciate U.S. government strong support in this matter.

On climate change, which is very important issue for all humankind, I appreciate President Bush's initiative during Heiligendamm G8 summit meeting. I extended an official invitation to President Bush today to attend, to participate in a high-level U.N. debate on climate change, which will be held on September 24th. Your participation will be very much appreciated and I'm looking forward to weling you to New York.

Lastly, on North Korean nuclear issue, I appreciate the U.S. government initiative and flexibility in promoting development of these issues. I'm encouraged and I wele the recent development of situation. I hope that the parties concerned, including DPRK, will take necessary measures to implement this joint statement to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for your hospitality.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you, sir. Thank you all.

WASHINGTON - The plex science of DNA analysis is now helping protect elephants by showing police and conservationists the source of black-market ivory.

The price of ivory has nearly quadrupled in recent years, prompting poachers to kill more elephants to sell their tusks illegally. Protecting the giant beasts is plicated by the fact they spread across large parts of Africa and authorities are unsure where the illegal hunting is occurring.

But the seizure of more than six tons of ivory in Singapore in 2002 has helped solve part of that puzzle, according to a report by Samuel K. Wasser of the Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington in this week's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Wasser and colleagues took samples of the confiscated ivory and pared it with baseline DNA collected from elephants across the continent over several years. DNA is the internal blueprint for life that carries the genes that develop into each individual.

The parison showed that the tusks seized from the black market came from elephants on Africa's broad savannas, primarily from a small area of southern Africa, most likely centered on Zambia, the researchers said.

Authorities had suspected the confiscated ivory had multiple origins, the researchers said, but "our results caused law enforcement to substantially narrow the area of origin and the trade routes being investigated."

The research was funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, African Elephant Conservation Fund, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Center for Conservation Biology.

6 Tips to Stay Young With Antioxidants

Antioxidants are important elements that purify the body and help you stay young. By blocking the oxidation process generated by free radicals, they reduce their harmful effects. Since they are usually not produced in the body, one needs to intake them through supplementary products. Antioxidants include Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Lutein, Lycopene, Carotenoids and are abundant in fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, grains, red meat, poultry and fish. Here are 6 antioxidants to help you stay young.

1. Lutein

This is present in green leafy vegetables and egg yolks, Lutein is great for our eyes and skin as they are the only organs of the body directly exposed to the outside environment and needs to be protected.

2. Carotenoids

Carotenoids are colorful plant pigments, some of which are vitamin A, lycopene. They are present in apricots, broccoli, pumpkin, spinach and sweet potatoes and are the reason why fruits and vegetables have a deep rich color. Generally, the deeper the color of the fruit or vegetable, the higher concentration of carotenoids. Bright orange carrots, for example, is especially a good source of beta-carotene.

3. Vitamin A

Vitamin A helps form and maintain healthy skin, teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, and skin. It is abundant in carrots, egg yolk, butter, cheese and milk.

4. Vitamin C

It helps protect cells from free radical damage, lower your cancer risk, regenerate vitamin E supplies, and improve iron absorption. Vitamin C is present in citrus fruit and juices (oranges, lemons), papaya, strawberries, capsicum, cabbage, and spinach.

5. Lycopene

Lycopene is a potent antioxidant that can help protect against degenerative diseases by preventing DNA damage in the cells and help the cells function better. High levels of lycopene correlate with reduced risk of cancer and heart diseases. It is found in tomatoes, watermelon, guava, papaya, apricots, oranges, and other foods.

6. Vitamin E

Vitamin E also known as alpha-tocopherol, is an antioxidant that keeps the immune system strong against viruses and bacteria.

文章“爛”怎麼會跟boiler(鍋爐)、pot(壺)扯上關係呢?

句中,“取悅市場的肥皁劇本”——sit plays that intends to tailor the marker,就能够用pot-boiler來取代。“生活、謀生”既然離不開鍋、碗、瓢、盆,以此為目标而創作的小說战劇本,用“炊具組开”來表達实是再形象不過了。

19世紀60年月,potboiler進进英語詞匯,用以描述a work of literature as money-makers rather than as works of art(以盈利為目标,缺少藝朮價值的做品)。

He had to boil the pot when he was a teenager.

  3. In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been pletely realized. __

翻Women are playing an increasingly important part in society today. Long age, women only did something in the kitchen or at home. Now many of them have serious jobs to serve for people. What men can do so can women.

With the changes in their social role, women’s position in the family has been improved as well. Today in the family, the wife often lots her husband to do something at home bat ago, only women did something. Men are foned of doing something at home.

In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been pletely realized. Sometimes, the matter, the husband hitting has welf, often happened. In the factory the wonmen to as much as the men, but they are paid less than the men. Some people have not pletely realized the liberation of women.

(2)用漢語思維,句子有明顯的漢語痕跡,如“What men can do so can women.”,應改為“Women can do what men can do”。
(3)啣接不天然,沒有效適噹的關聯詞,如“Sometimes, the matter, the husband hitting has welf, often happened”,應改為“The case that husband hits his wife often happens. ”

Women are playing an increasingly important part in society today,哈佛数位翻译社. In today, many women have a work. They worked as well as men playing an important part in factories. There are many women in government also. They lead other people country, and make out plans. There are many scientist slso. They event new things to improve our life.

With the changes in their social role, women’s position in the family has been improved as well. In ancient, women’s position in family is pity. They had to looks after their children, did every how husband ordered her to do. But now it is changed. They are equal to her husband. They have the right of speaking of idea, discussion thing with her husband, do what she wants to do.

In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been pletely realized. We also should realize, women’ likerty are limited. For example, many factories want men bee its workers but the chance of women is less than men. Everyone should do their best to change this condition. I’m sure, the liberation of women would be increased.

  (2)啣接不做作,沒有效適噹的關聯詞,如第一段僟個句子之間能够用一些“besides”、“on the other hand”、“furthermore”、“in addition”等。
(3)語言錯誤較多,许多句子欠亨順,如“In today, many women have a work.”應改為“Today, many women get a job.”(濫用介詞);“In ancient, women’s position in family is pity”中pity應改為pitiful(詞形誤用)等有多處錯誤。

Women are playing an increasingly important part in society today. Many Women today are playing an important part at works that was thought only could be done by the men before. For an example. Some women are not secrtary in the office, instead, they bee manager of a pany.

With the changes in their social role, women’s position in the family has been improved as well. In the world today, more and more women have their own job. They get their own salary, and bee more independent from their husband. With the economic situation improved, their family position is improving.

In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been pletely realized. Many husbands only want his wife to stay at home, and do house works or do some shopping. They only want their wife to be a housewife, but not a manager of a pany.

(3)語言錯誤相噹多,如“For an example”,“Some women are not secrtary in the office, instead, they bee manager of a pany.”應改為“Some women are on longer secretaries in the office, instead, they bee managers of the panies.”(單復數)

商场Women are playing an increasingly important part in society today. More and more women go to work to earn money instead of keeping the house or looking after the children. Women have entered many fields of society including scientific field. As we know, many women sports teams have won the world’s champions such as Chinese women’s Volleyball Team.

With the changes in their social role, women’s position in the family has been improved as well. Husbands are not the masters of wives in many places. Husbands and wives are equal now. They join together to overe difficulties and share happiness.

In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been pletely realized. Also in some places. Women are considered being “thing” belong to men. They have little chance to find jobs. They don’t get equal pay for equal job. This is a problem must be solved not only by society but also by women themselves.

Women are playing an increasingly important part in society today. In Many countries, more and more women are acting as workers, farmers, scientists and even leaders. We can say that almost all jobs which men can do are done perfectly by women. Women are no longer looked down upon by society.

商场With the changes in their social role, women’s position in the family has been improved as well. Husband and wife are now equal in the family. They cope with problems of daily life together, and share happiness with each ther. Also, you can hardly find out that in today’s families, women are being busy with dinners, whereas men fortably sitting in armchairs, reading newspapers.

A number of men still jealously guard their rights, and regard women as incapable creature. Few women are allowed to attend important international meetings dominated by men. 翻譯:President Bush Meets with Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom - 英語演講

April 28, 2008

PRESIDENT BUSH: It's been my honor to wele to the Oval Office the President and First Lady of a close friend of the United States. Mr. President, thank you for ing.

We've had a good discussion about a variety of issues. We discussed bilateral relations between Guatemala and the United States, which are very strong. We are friends. We treat each other with respect. Our objective with U.S. foreign policy is to have a neighborhood that is peaceful and prosperous, where social justice is important; want to achieve social justice through good health policy, good education policy, good judicial policy. The United States is pleased to help this government as best as we possibly can help the average citizen get a good education and have good health care.

We talked about how CAFTA is working. Exports to the United States have increased; exports from the United States have increased. And that's good. We talked about security and the need for the region -- Mexico, the United States and the countries of Central America -- to fight drug trafficking. I told the President that we are working hard to reduce demand for drugs here in America,翻譯公司. And at the same time, we want to work in conjunction with strong leaders to make sure these drug traffickers don't get a stronghold. And that's why it's very important for Congress to fund the Merida project.

We talked about the reforms that the government is instituting inside of Guatemala, including tax reform, and reform to make sure that people who break the law are held to account.

I was particularly pleased to note that the Guatemalan government and its leadership is promoting laws to make sure women are treated well and that violence against women is prosecuted.

And so -- and we're going to talk a little later on about the Millennium Challenge Account. And by the way, we talked about blueberries, and -- so that blueberries are able to e off-season here to the United States, which is a positive development for Guatemalan farmers.

And finally, of course, the President brought up the issue of immigration. And he wanted to urge me to think about TPS -- TPS for citizens, as well as prehensive immigration reform. I assured him that I will consider his request, and I assured him that I believe prehensive immigration reform is in our nations' best interests.

And so we've had a good discussion, and right after this press availability, I'll be taking he and the First Lady to lunch. And I'm looking forward to serving them lunch, and I bet you're looking forward to eating lunch. Thanks for ing.

PRESIDENT COLOM: (As translated.) I want to thank President Bush for his hospitality. We've spent a couple of days working here, and we are very happy to hold this meeting, in which we have discussed strengthening our relationship -- an already a strong relationship, in fact.

We discussed, as the President mentioned, the fight against drug trafficking. We are doing everything necessary to eliminate drug trafficking and drug traffickers from our territory. We discussed the issue of social investment. We have received support from USAID. We, our two countries, have mon aims in this regard.

We also discussed the issue of our migrants. We brought up TPS with the President; we will be awaiting a response on that. We described our recent tax reform to the President; that is something we're starting in Guatemala because we need to ensure that we have the public funds to be able to carry out the reforms in the areas of social justice and others that we have discussed.

We want to express our appreciation for the support that we have received from the United States to bat drug trafficking. Recently we received four helicopters; this has been extremely helpful to us. We've also achieved good success on this front with the recent cocaine seizures. In fact, an operation was just carried out last night; a very large one, very successful. And on that, we are working not just with the United States but also with Mexico and the entire neighborhood in Central America, because all of us must be involved, as President Bush said, in order to bat that scourge at all levels.

And so we are very happy to be here and very happy to be moving forward. Thank you.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Gracias, señor. Thank you all.

Peace Without Conquest (Vietnam) speech by Lyndon B. Johnson - 英語演講

Tonight Americans and Asians are dying for a world where each people may choose its own path to change.

This is the principle for which our ancestors fought in the valleys of Pennsylvania. It is the principle for which our sons fight tonight in the jungles of Viet-Nam.

Viet-Nam is far away from this quiet campus. We have no territory there, nor do we seek any. The war is dirty and brutal and difficult. And some 400 young men, born into an America that is bursting with opportunity and promise, have ended their lives on Viet-Nam’s steaming soil.

Why must we take this painful road?

Why must this nation hazard its ease, its interest, and its power for the sake of a people so far away?

We fight because we must fight if we are to live in a world where every country can shape its own destiny, and only in such a world will our own freedom be finally secure.

This kind of world will never be built by bombs or bullets. Yet the infirmities of man are such that force must often precede reason and the waste of war, the works of peace.

We wish this were not so. But we must deal with the world as it is, if it is ever to be as we wish.

The world as it is in Asia is not a serene or peaceful place.

The first reality is that North Viet-Nam has attacked the independent nation of South Viet-Nam,翻譯公司. Its object is total conquest.

Of course, some of the people of South Viet-Nam are participating in attack on their own government. But trained men and supplies, orders and arms, flow in a constant stream from North to South.

This support is the heartbeat of the war.

And it is a war of unparalleled brutality. Simple farmers are the targets of assassination and kidnapping. Women and children are strangled in the night because their men are loyal to the government. And helpless villagers are ravaged by sneak attacks. Large-scale raids are conducted on towns, and terror strikes in the heart of cities.

The confused nature of this conflict cannot mask the fact that it is the new face of an old enemy.

Over this war-and all Asia-is another reality: the deepening shadow of munist China. The rulers in Hanoi are urged on by Peking. This is a regime which has destroyed freedom in Tibet, which has attacked India and has been condemned by the United Nations for aggression in Korea. It is a nation which is helping the forces of violence in almost every continent. The contest in Viet-Nam is part of a wider pattern of aggressive purposes.

Why are these realities our concern? Why are we in South Viet-Nam?

We are there because we have a promise to keep. Since 1954 every American President has offered support to the people of South Viet-Nam. We have helped to build, and we have helped to defend. Thus, over many years, we have made a national pledge to help South Viet-Nam defend its independence.

And I intend to keep that promise.

To dishonour that pledge, to abandon this small and brave nation to its enemies, and to the terror that must follow, would be an unforgivable wrong.

We are also there to strengthen world order. Around the globe from Berlin to Thailand are people whose well being rests in part on the belief that they can count on us if they are attacked. To leave Viet-Nam to its fate would shake the confidence of all these people in the value of an American mitment and in the value of America’s word. The result would be increased unrest and instability, even wide war.

We are also there because there are great stakes in the balance. Let no one think for a minute that retreat from Viet-Nam would bring an end to the conflict. The battle would be renewed in one country and then another. The central lesson of our time is that the appetite of aggression is never satisfied. To withdraw from one battlefield means only to prepare for the next. We must say in Southeast Asia-as we did in Europe-in the words of the Bible: "Hitherto shalt thou e, but no further.",德文翻譯;

There are those who say that all our effort there will be futile-that China’s power is such that it is bound to dominate all southeast Asia. But there is no end to that argument until all of the nations of Asia are swallowed up.

There are those who wonder why we have a responsibility there. Well. we have it there for the same reason that we have a responsibility for the defence of Europe. World War II was fought in both Europe and Asia, and when it ended we found ourselves with continued responsibility for the defence of freedom.

Our objective is the independence of South Viet-Nam, and its freedom from attack. We want nothing for ourselves-only that the people of South Viet-Nam be allowed to guide their own country in their own way.

We will do everything necessary to reach that objective. And we will do only what is absolutely necessary.

In recent months attacks on South Viet-Nam were stepped up. Thus, it became necessary for us to increase our response and to make attacks by air. This is not a change of purpose. It is a change in what we believe that purpose requires.

We do this in order to slow down aggression.

We do this to increase the confidence of the brave people of South Viet-Nam who have bravely borne this brutal battle for so many years with so many casualties.

And we do this to convince the leaders of North Viet-Nam-and all who seek to share their conquest-of a simple fact:

We will not be defeated.

We will not grow tired.

We will not withdraw, either openly or under the cloak of a meaningless agreement.

We know that air attacks alone will not acplish all of these purposes. But it is our best and prayerful judgment that they are a necessary part of the surest road to peace.

We hope that peace will e swiftly. But that is in the hands of others besides ourselves. And we must be prepared for a long continued conflict. It will require patience as well as bravery, the will to endure as well as the will to resist.

I wish it were possible to convince others with words of what we now find it necessary to say with guns and planes: Armed hostility is futile. Our resources are equal to the challenge. Because we fight for values and we fight for principles, rather than territory or colonies, our patience and our determination are unending...
